Some Amazing Pictures from Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year Contest was first run in the year 2006 and is organized every year by Wikimedia Commons Foundation which is a part of Wikipedia. It selects some of the best images from the featured images of Wikipedia’s Wikimedia Commons database which is a online repository of free use images, sounds and videos. The competition is open to everyone and the winner is decided the votes of the participants and Wikipedia users. The images have to be shared under Attribution-Share Alike 4.0 International (CC BY-SA 4.0) license.  Most images on Wikipedia fall under this category and are free for sharing if you giver proper attribution to the original creators.

The pictures participating in this competition  are some of the most amazing and wonderfully shot images you would ever see on Wikipedia. These photos were shot by professional as well as amateur photographers whereas some of them were taken in space or international space station. Some images which fall under public domain like those released by NASA and other government organisations are also nominated for this competition.

The photo was taken by biologist Renato Augusto Martins. He  found these two in the Atlantic Forest in Bahia, Brazil. In the Photo Two Phyllomedusa rohdei vie for a branch, one passing over the other seemingly reaching for something just outside the frame. The Ravens of the Tower of London are six captive ravens which live at the Tower of London. Their presence is traditionally believed to protect The Crown and the tower. A superstition holds that “if the Tower of London ravens are lost or fly away, the Crown will fall and Britain with it”.
